It takes an Artist to See

Actually, when I look at my scant records of the development of this knot, it took me about four years to see that what these hearts are showing me is the inseparability of Humanity. Four hearts for the Races. As One. All on the same unbroken interconnected circuit. The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a long time ago, said "We may have all come here on different boats, but we're all in the same boat now".

All this, as I was pulled along by this knot, seemed pretty wild and amazing.

Next, I was shown how the basic unit of these various drawings of the knot was the triangle. So I began cutting them up and re-arranging them, which lead me to the Vesica Piscis. Which meant nothing to me until I again encountered it at the Academy where I was studying sculpture, where I realized that it was the birthplace of all geometric forms.

Already the egg was a strong presence in my consciousness. I'd already made a small Cosmic Egg. A larger egg with a woman inside. Not being too interested in geometric forms, I nevertheless wanted to see the Vesica in three dimensions. So, with only the most basic tools, not even a scaffold, in three years I managed to finish this amazing fourteen foot tall shape.

It seemed to me the most perfect symbol for Woman, ever.

Thus it seemed obvious that the Monument would be next.
